About 360 Clips

360 CLIPS STORY

360 Clips is a new business started by a small team within Brighter Software.

We had previously worked to some degree with 360 having coded a couple of interactive tours  and promotional websites based on static 360 panoramas. 360 clips was a new field for us however and we had a lot to learn and a fair few challenges to overcome along the way.

We purchased our first 3d printer in June 2016, along with 6 GoPro's and set to work building our first 360 camera rig for our 360 videos.

3d Modelling

We found a good starting point for our 3d models, but since we had purchased the latest GoPro Hero 5's the models were outdated. So we needed to learn the ropes with 3d modelling. For this we set about getting to grips with Sketch Up and Cura. Cura was quite easy to learn but Sketch Up was a bit more challenging so I recommend an online video tutorial such as this one.

OUR FIRST PRINTS

3d Printing isn't quite as straight forward as we had hoped. Especially when trying to print a large job. Getting the calibration and temperatures right takes a fair amount of trial and error, the biggest challenges being getting the temperatures right and ensuring precise calibration of the height of the printing nozzle to the printer bed. Adhesion of your print can be quite challenging too. In the end we have found reasonable success with DUCT tape!

PUTTING THE 360 CLIPS CAMERA RIG TOGETHER

Eventually we managed to design and print our Go Pro rig... ..................................................................................................................................................................................

OUR FIRST 360 Video FILMING EXPERIENCE

Towards the end of 2016 we took the 360 clips rig up to Dunstable Downs. It might look like a sunny day - but it was bitter cold and windy as hell that day.

THE 360 VIDEO STITCHING PROCESS

We soon learnt that the quality of 360 clips and the stitching process involved a deep understanding of quite a lot of variables in the entire process from filming through to edit and post production. There are a few software options on the market for stitching 360 video but we have adapted some open source code and we now have our own in house solution for stitching the footage together into a panorama. The results are starting to look quite promising and we feel ready to move on to our first client!

We setup a 360 ceiling rig and although we haven't quite finished the edit here is the result so far:

We are looking forward to an exciting future in 360 video and VR. If you are interested in joining us on that journey and feel that 360 video could help you to showcase your business or facilities then get in touch as we'd love to hear from you.
